Looking to Celebrate the 150th Arbor Day? Try One of These 150 Tree-Themed Activities from the Arbor Day Foundation

LINCOLN, Nebraska (April 26, 2022) – In honor of the 150th Arbor Day holiday, the Arbor Day Foundation compiled a list of 150 activities to help people commemorate the national holiday, observed on Friday, April 29. The list was curated with the intent to provide a wide variety of options for people to spend time in nature and learn more about trees.

“For the past 150 years, Arbor Day is the time for people to take some time to appreciate the positive impact trees have on people and the planet,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “We are encouraging everyone to have fun outside in nature and among the trees as they think about how trees frame our lives.”

Arbor Day is one of the oldest environmental holidays observed in the United States and across the world. The Arbor Day Foundation, founded in 1972, is the largest member nonprofit dedicated to tree planting. In its first 50 years, the Foundation has helped to plant and distribute almost 500 million trees in more than 50 countries.

The 150 Arbor Day activities were designed to inspire people to celebrate the “tree planter’s” holiday. It contains a variety of different activities to offer people different options to encourage them to celebrate in a way that is most meaningful to them. Categories of activities include:

  1. Do-It-Yourself: Activities include making homemade syrup from a tree, building furniture from recycled wood and creating leaf-patterned latte foam art.
  2. Arts and Crafts: Activities include creating holiday tree ornaments, making a bird feeder out of pinecones and crafting tree-ring stamps.
  3. Kid Friendly: Activities Include organizing a nature art show, creating an animal out of twigs and leaves and volunteering at a local school to teach students about trees.
  4. Interaction with a Tree: Activities include planting, hugging and climbing a tree.
  5. Educational: Activities include taking a tree tour, visiting a local tree nursery and volunteering with a local tree-planting organization.
  6. Social Media: Activities include liking and sharing posts about Arbor Day, posting a picture of a favorite tree and following and engaging with tree organizations on social media.
